The Galo de Barcelos (Rooster of Barcelos) became a national symbol of Portugal thanks to João Domingos Côta da Rocha.

Prazeres, his granddaughter, now carries on the family tradition and offers her own interpretation of the Galo de Barcelos — without ever denying what makes it so iconic: its flamboyant colours and exaggerated comb.

The works of Prazeres Côta, and those of her mother Júlia, always evoke rural life in the Minho region, its traditional figures, and the influences of religious and mythological beliefs.

Why I love it

  • A one-of-a-kind creation between folk art and craftsmanship.
  • A deeply personal take on the iconic Barcelos Rooster.
  • The uniqueness and authenticity of every handmade piece.

More information?

The Côta family is without doubt the most iconic and charismatic representative of figurative folk art in Barcelos and the wider Minho region of northern Portugal.

Today, Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, passionately continues the family legacy begun by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côta da Rocha, creator of the legendary Galo de Barcelos, now a symbol of Portugal.

Introduced to a wider public at the Feira de Barcelos in 2018, where she was named Best New Artist, Prazeres is now recognised as a rising figure in Portuguese folk art. The Museum of Pottery pays tribute to her through the exhibition "Geração Côta", showcasing several of her works from both private and public collections.
